With 97% literacy rate Ladakh becomes a fully literate union territory
Ladakh has reached 97 percent literacy, becoming a fully literate union territory through the ULLAS - Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram scheme.
Ladakh has achieved a historic milestone with a 97 percent literacy rate, now recognized as a fully "functionally literate" union territory. This achievement is credited to the successful implementation of the ULLAS - Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram scheme.
During a celebration at Sindhu Sanskritik Kendra (SSK) in Leh, Lieutenant Governor BD Mishra emphasized the administration's dedication to Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN), which includes essential skills in reading, writing, and mathematics.
Dr. Mishra urged students to pursue job creation alongside seeking employment, attributing the progress to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education, praised Ladakh's achievement and assured continued support from the ministry to further develop the region's education system.
ABOUT ULLAS PROGRAMME
The ULLAS - Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram, or the New India Literacy Programme (NILP), is a centrally sponsored initiative running from 2022 to 2027. Aligned with NEP 2020, it aims to empower adults aged 15 and above who missed formal schooling, integrating them into society for national development.
The programme consists of five key components:
1. Foundational literacy and numeracy: Basic skills in reading, writing, and math.
2. Critical life skills: Essential skills for daily functioning.
3. Basic education: Foundational education for those without formal schooling.
4. Vocational skills: Training in various trades to improve employability.
5. Continuing education: Ongoing education to maintain and update skills and knowledge.
Nationally, the programme has benefited over 7.7 million individuals, supported by the ULLAS Mobile App, which has 12.9 million learners and 3.5 million volunteer teachers enrolled.
Ladakh's 97 percent literacy rate highlights the success of the ULLAS programme and the region's commitment to education. This achievement not only improves the residents' quality of life but also serves as an example for other regions to emulate.
