According to the plan, “the students have to first register on the UGC’s Distance Education Bureau (UGC-DEB) web portal – deb.ugc.ac.in and with their Academic bank of credit (ABC)-ID and generate a new DEB-ID”, the chairman of UGC Mamidala jagadesh Kumar stated.

“DEB-ID will be very important for students while enroling in recognised ODL/Online programmes, except for foreign learners, and the IDs will be valid for lifetime. Higher education institutions (HEIs) are requested to implement this new admission process and promote it to new learners to ensure effective adoption and operation”. The UGC Chairman added.

The change will come in effect from September 2024 and it ensures that students only apply in (HEIs) for (ODL) and other online programmes. This new change will be helpful for students and it may ease the admission process.

Under this system it will be easier for students to avoid multiple submissions and paperwork and they can easily select from different online programmes as well.

Moreover, the UGC had established different admission timelines across institutions to avoid any sort of deviation for easy application experience. The new system allows students to check for real time updates, and they can also track their progress consistently.

UGC’s aims to include enhanced support services like helpdesks and virtual counseling to guide students throughout the admission process. By using advanced technology UGC strives to make higher education more effective and helpful for students all around the globe.
