The Tamil Nadu School Education Department has embarked on a mission to boost adult literacy through the New India Literacy Programme, a volunteer-driven initiative set to operate from September to February. Aiming to reach 4.8 lakh individuals who lack basic reading and writing skills, the programme significantly exceeded its target last year, benefitting 5.28 lakh people.

Identifying Eligible Participants

In July, district officials were instructed to conduct a thorough survey to identify eligible participants over 15 years old. These include family members of government school students, and individuals listed in revenue registers for the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) and Self-Help Groups (SHGs). The programme provides two hours of daily instruction, culminating in 200 hours over six months.

Volunteer Engagement

The success of the programme hinges on the active participation of volunteers. The department is encouraging those who have completed Class 10 and are passionate about teaching to join the initiative. In addition to students and teachers, retired government officials, and volunteers from Illam Thedi Kalvi and Nehru Yuva Kendra are also invited to participate. Comprehensive training programmes at block, district, and state levels will equip volunteers with the necessary teaching skills.

Implementation and Monitoring

The detailed information of both volunteers and beneficiaries must be submitted to the Directorate of Non-Formal and Adult Education by August 18. To ensure the effectiveness of the programme, a progress assessment test will be conducted in February or March. This structured approach aims to provide adults with essential literacy skills, thereby enhancing their ability to participate fully in society.
