Schools shut in Una till May 25 amid heat waves

All primary and pre-primary schools in Una have been shut down after the district was recorded as the hottest in the state, with temperatures soaring to 41.4 degrees Celsius on Thursday. The local meteorological department has issued a yellow warning for heat waves in isolated, low-lying areas from May 25 to May 27.

All pre-primary and primary schools private and government will remain closed on May 24 and May 25 following the heat wave, officials said on Thursday. District Magistrate Jatin Lal said that the decision has been taken to protect children from the blazing heat.

Yellow Heat Wave Warning Issued

Una the hottest in the state on Thursday, recorded a maximum temperature of 41.4 degrees Celcius. A yellow warning for heat waves was issued by the local MeT department in isolated, low areas from May 25 to 27. There is a severe upsurge of heat waves in the district and incidents of school children falling ill in schools due to the extreme heat are being reported Lal said. 

The Indian Meteorological Department also expressed the possibility of a heat wave in the coming days. Taking note of this, it has been decided to keep all government and private primary and pre-primary schools in the district closed on May 24 and May 25, he said. 

 

Impact on School Exams

Following the order, schools holding exams on Friday and Saturday are advised to schedule the examinations from 7 am to 11 am. 

Schools were given instructions to provide all facilities like drinking water, fans, coolers, or air conditioning in the examination halls of schools, the order said. The schools have also been asked to ensure the availability of first aid kits and a doctor or nurse for immediate treatment in case of heat stroke, it read.
