Schools are closed due to heavy rainfall in Odisha's Puri until the weather conditions improve.

On Thursday, September 26,2024, the Puri District in Odish have announced closure of all schools. The decisions come after heavy rainfall affecting the region. As, Puri and Paradip have recorded 3 cm rain, whereas Bhubaneswar saw 2 cm on Wednesday and Thursday.

The rainfall has led to waterlogging in several areas, and students have been requested and advised to stay in contact with their respective schools for any updates regarding the reopening of schools.  The reports have shown that the heavy rainfall shall continue in six districts, namely Bhubaneshwar and Cuttak with Puri, Khurda ,Jagatsinghpur, Jaipur and Dhenkanal are expected to receive intense rainfall. In addition, the IMD had predicted light to moderate rain with thunderstorms in Kendrapada, Ganjam, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Keonjhar, and Nayagarh.

To combat the impact of flooding, pumps have been installed at the Konark Sun temple near Puri, where the water accumulation has been an ongoing concern due to the rains. For the purpose of safety of students, teachers and the staff, the district authorities have made an announcement to keep the schools shut until the situation turns better.

Meanwhile, the parents, students and guardians have been advised to stay in touch regarding any communication with school, fur further announcements as in when will the school resume. No specific date has been mentioned till now, as officials monitor the situation closely.

Due to extreme weather conditions across the nation, the schools have been shut in past few days. In Mumbai it was due to heavy rainfalls , traffic and water logging and Bihar due to heavy rainfall as well, where the high river Ganga wave causes potential threat for a flood like situation, while in North-east Assam it was due to increasing temperatures, the heatwave. The disrupting weather has affected the learning for students immensely. While the respective governments have been taking need initiatives.
