President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday, October 24,2024 appointed Professor Mazhar Asif as Jamia Millia Islamia’s Vice-Chancellor. As per the official notification by the Ministry of Education on Thursday.

The notification read “I am directed to convey that in exercise of powers conferred under statutes of Jamia Millia Islamia Act, 1988, the President of India, in her capacity as the Visitor of JMI, has been pleased to appoint Prof Mazhar Asif, School of Languages, JNU, New Delhi as the Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Milia Islamia for a period of five years from the date on which he enters office or until he attains the age of 70 years, whichever is earlier,”.

The decision comes after span of nearly a year after JMI’s former V-C Najma Akhtar completed her tenure and the position was vacated. Akhtar’s tenure was completed on November 12,2023.

A search committee was curated to select JMI’ V-C. The interview of candidates was organized between the duration of February 26 and 27. After the education Ministry decided on the candidate, as per the procedure and then its recommendation was sent to the visitor for the final approval.

As per the University Grants Commission (UGC) Regulations, 2018, the V-C of a university, is appointed by the Visitor or Chancellor from a panel of three to five names recommended which is duly constituted by the search-cum selection committee. The Visitor is empowered to call for a set of fresh names if there has been dissatisfaction with the given panel.

Mr. Asfi is presently a professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University’s (JNU) School of languages.
