Located in Assam, the Indian Institute of Information Technology Guwahati (IIIT Guwahati) is a significant national institution. It was founded in 2013 by the Ministry of Education (MoE) in cooperation with the Assamese government. It placed between 151-200 in the engineering category of the National Institutional Ranking Framework, which was announced by the Ministry of Education this year.
The Institute debuted in 2020 with a ranking of 66 and has subsequently seen a decline. 151–20 was the rank band of the Guwahati-based Institute last year as well. Further noteworthy is the fact that it is the only institute in a public-private collaboration to be ranked below 200.
IIIT Guwahati: NIRF Rankings in engineering category
2020: 66 rank
2021: 73 rank
2022: 112 rank
2023: 151-200 rank
2024: 151-200 rank
Their grades have been examined on the Institute's official website. It indicates that they have dropped by 2.89 from 2021. "The negative faculty-to-student ratio was the main cause of this, as it resulted in a 2.91 mark reduction. “The number of students has increased while the faculty strength has remained nearly the same.” The Institute cited this as the reason for the decline, noting that it is difficult for an institution that depends only on its revenue to improve the teacher-to-student ratio.
Reviewing the areas for improvement in the upcoming NIRF 2024 rankings, it stated that they have room to enhance their scores in the Research and Professional Practice category because they have a strong quantity of publications, but the quality needs to be improved.
The Institute, on the other hand, concentrates on cutting-edge research and instruction in computer science and information technology with the goal of producing qualified workers and encouraging creativity.
IIIT Guwahati is ranked in the 151-200 band in the NIRF 2024 rankings for engineering.
The decline is attributed primarily to the negative faculty-to-student ratio, which has resulted in lower marks.
IIIT Guwahati’s best ranking was 66th in the NIRF 2020 rankings.
IIIT Guwahati plans to improve the quality of research and professional practices to enhance future NIRF rankings.
The Institute faces challenges in improving the ratio due to reliance solely on its revenue to increase faculty strength.
