Kerala School teaches students to identify fake news

The Kerala Government has launched 'Fake News Detection' modules into the ICT (Information and Communication Technology) textbooks for classes 5 and 7, aiming to equip them with essential skills to identify and combat information.

This innovative initiative, aimed to help students recognise fake news and perform fact checking in online platforms, is a key component of the stated comprehensive strategy, empowering them with the skills to navigate the digital landscape effectively.

According to the K Anvar Sadath, Ceo of Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE), the driving force behind this initiative stated "The new ICT textbook includes chapters that equip students to identify fake news and malicious content, embodying the spirit of Satyameva Jayate."

The ICT textbook for class 5 features a chapter called 'Let's Search the Internet’, which not only helps students how to navigate online platforms but also emphasizes responsible screen time for management. Similarly in the textbook of class 7, chapter titles 'Lets Search and Find’delves into the crucial topics like importance of verifying information, copyright laws and legal implications of spreading false information.

The Kerala government aims to expand the fakes news detection and digital literacy modules to ICT textbooks for class 6,8,9 and 10 in the coming academic year. Notably this expansion will also introduce students to the basics of AI, making Kerala one of the first states in India to incorporate AI education at the school level.
