On June 29, 2024, the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) will have its 57th convocation event, marking the academic achievement of its graduating students as they begin their next chapter in life. The Chief Guest for the historic event will be Professor Jayathi Y. Murthy, an alumnus of IITK and President of Oregon State University (OSU). The much awaited event will be supervised by Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director of IIT Kanpur, and Dr. K Radhakrishnan, Chairperson of the Board of Governors (BoG) of IIT Kanpur.
In 2012, Professor Jayathi Y Murthy received recognition as a distinguished alumnus from IITK, where she got her Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree. In 2022, she was named OSU's 16th president, making history as the institution's first female leader of colour. Renowned engineering education pioneer Prof. Murthy is well-known for emphasising inclusion, equity, and diversity.
There will be two sessions to the Convocation Ceremony for the 2,332 graduating students this year. The first session will recognise the exceptional achievers in the Main Auditorium of IITK, which can seat 1250 people. In the second session, degrees will be awarded to students by specific departments in several lecture halls, under the direction of the chairs of the Senate Under-Graduate Committee (SUGC) and Senate Post-Graduate Committee (SPGC). To enable all graduating students to take part in this celebration of their academic accomplishments, the ceremony is being held in two sessions.
There are 226 PhD recipients, 457 MTech recipients, and 842 BTech recipients among the graduating students. A total of 165 students from MSc (2-year), 36 MBA, 12 MTech-PhD (joint degree), 1 MDes (joint degree), 17 MDes, 77 MS (by research), 40 PGPEX-VLFM, 26 Double Major, 89 Dual Degree, 14 MS-PD (MS part of the Dual Degree), 125 BS, and 205 eMasters degree programs will also be present at the ceremony. In keeping with IITK's dedication to promoting a multidisciplinary academic environment, this diversified collection of graduates is indicative of the institution's wide range of academic offerings.
The IIT Kanpur administration's suggested dress code will be followed at the event. Male students should wear a cream-colored kurta with white pajamas, while female students should wear a cream-colored kurta with white leggings or churidars and formal shoes.
