IIT Kanpur Adopts Olympiad-Based Admission for BTech, BS Programmes

Olympiads will be used to admit applicants to the departments of chemistry, economics, computer science and engineering, biological sciences and bioengineering, mathematics, and statistics.

Through Olympiads, students will be admitted to the BTech and BS programs at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur). Olympiads will be used to admit students to IIT Kanpur's BTech-BS programs in five departments starting in the 2025–2026 school year.

Olympiads will be used to admit applicants to the departments of chemistry, economics, computer science and engineering, biological sciences and bioengineering, mathematics, and statistics.

According to a statement from IIT Kanpur, there are two steps in the selection process. In order to create a shortlist of candidates, each department will first evaluate applicants according to their Olympiad rankings. Following that, these applicants will take part in a compulsory written test and, if necessary, an interview.

To make sure that the admissions process is efficient and that all open seats within each department are filled without overlap, a selection committee at the Institute level, headed by the Dean of Academic Affairs, will compile the suggestions from each department.

Olympiads in biology, physics, chemistry, and arithmetic will determine admission to the biological sciences and bioengineering departments. Olympiads in mathematics and information technology will be used to determine admission to the departments of computer science and engineering. admittance to the economic sciences, mathematics, and statistics departments will be determined by the Olympiad in Mathematics, while admittance to the Chemistry department will be determined by the Olympiad in Chemistry.

Common qualifying requirements for Olympiad admission to IIT Kanpur
- The candidate's specified age restriction must match that of the JEE Advanced applicants for the same year.
- The applicant must have taken the Class 12 or equivalent exam for the first time in the year they were admitted to IIT Kanpur or the year before, with math, physics, and chemistry as required courses.
- The applicant ought to have received a first-class grade on the qualifying test.
- The applicant ought to have participated in the International Olympic Training Camp in the field designated by the relevant agency.
