The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, has fallen to the 251-300 band in the most recent World University Rankings 2025 published by Times Higher Education. Though it did not make it into the world's top 250, IISc continued to be the best institution in India.

With all four now in the 401–500 band, the rankings of Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, Mahatma Gandhi University, and Anna University have all improved. In contrast to the previous year, Jamia Millia Islamia's rating has decreased (501–600).

Along with UPES, Indian Institute of Technology Indore is one of the largest entrants into the 501–600 band. Fourteen Indian institutes—AMU, Amity University Noida, BHU, BITS Pilani, Chitkara University, IIT-Patna, IIIT-Hyderabad, KIIT University, LPU, Malaviya National Institute of Technology, Panjab University, Symbiosis International University, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, and VIT University—have positions in the 601–800 belt.

IIT Guwahati has plummeted to the 801–1000 belt; the university has recently been in the headlines due to student suicides. According to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, the University of Oxford has maintained its top spot for nine years running, with MIT coming in second. Additionally, universities in the US and the UK occupy the majority of the top 10.

Indian colleges are making significant progress, but it is still difficult for them to rank in the top 250. These rankings demonstrate the competitive character of higher education worldwide. IISc is still the leader in India, but other colleges are catching up as well, placing higher in the world rankings, like Anna University and Shoolini University. However, there is a need to give academic quality and student welfare more attention, as seen by the decline of schools like Jamia Millia Islamia and IIT Guwahati. Top 10 rankings continue to show the dominance of US and UK colleges.
