Governor of Assam advocates for higher female participation in technical education
Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria has encouraged technical institutes to boost the enrollment of female students, highlighting the disparity in female enrollment between technical courses and traditional studies.
During his address at the 6th convocation of the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) in Guwahati, Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria highlighted the necessity for technical educational institutions to boost female enrolment. He drew attention to the significant gender gap in technical courses, where female enrolment lags behind that of male students and even conventional fields of study.
Kataria urged institution authorities to devise strategies to attract more female students to technical courses, emphasizing that girls have demonstrated their capabilities across various domains, and providing them with ample opportunities is crucial for their effective empowerment.
The governor encouraged graduates to leverage their skills to foster comprehensive and positive societal changes. He described the convocation as a milestone in the academic journey, acknowledging the years of effort, dedication, and determination of the students.
Addressing the graduates, Kataria encouraged them to seize the numerous opportunities awaiting them after completing their education, urging them to tackle challenges and contribute meaningfully to societal advancement.
Highlighting the role of educational institutions in disseminating knowledge and nurturing skill development, he underscored the pervasive influence of information technology in modern life, enhancing convenience across diverse sectors.
Governor Kataria also underscored India's significant position in the global information technology sector.
Other speakers at the event included former IIT-Kharagpur Director Prof. Partha Pratim Chakraborty, IIIT-Guwahati Board of Governors Chairman Satyavrat Dev, and IIIT-Guwahati Director Professor Sharat Kumar Patra.
According to a Raj Bhawan release, a total of 227 students received graduate and post-graduate degrees, comprising 177 B Tech, 41 M Tech, and 9 PhDs.
