The Delhi Education department has released a notice directing all private schools to ensure the continuation of education for children who have become orphans or lost a parent after March 2020 regardless of whether due to covid-19 or other reasons.

According to the notice, District Deputy Directors of Education (DDEs) are directed to guarantee uninterrupted education to all these students. Additionally, the schools which are built on the land allotted by Delhi Development Authority (DDA) or the government must immediately offer free education to these students who have lost a parent or became orphans.

The notice also highlighted that students who have lost one or both the parents after March 2020 due to covid-19 or other reasons, should be categorized to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) or Disadvantage Group category. Private schools are eligible for fee reimbursement from the Directorate of Education for these students up to the elementary level.

Following the completion of class 8, these students will receive guidance and support to facilitate a seamless transition into government school, ensuring uninterrupted education.

The notice also emphasized that district DDEs are accountable for timely action on these cases. This initiative aligns with the Delhi government’s comprehensive strategy to support the education of vulnerable children throughout and beyond the pandemic.

The directive seeks to ensure that these students receive the required assistance to pursue their studies in recognized private schools, including both aided and unaided institutions.
