According to information provided by the Joint Admission Board (JAB) in the Joint Implementation Committee (JIC) report 2024, Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at IIT Bombay emerged as the most popular department among candidates. The study states that 25,481 applicants were selected for CSE at IIT Bombay, up from 21,893 in 2023.
Electrical Engineering (EE) was this year's second most popular branch at IIT Bombay, appearing as a choice in IIT forms around 21,811 times. The field of Mechanical Engineering (ME) showed growth of about 19% (19,469), whereas the field of Electrical Engineering had a gain in popularity of over 15%. Conversely, the five-year Electrical Engineering program saw a 25% rise in enrolment, with 13,600 students ranking it as one of their top options.
Remarkably, instead of civil engineering, chemical and aerospace engineering appeared as the fourth and fifth most popular selections. In Chemical Engineering, there were 15,430 candidate choices (19% increase) while in Aerospace Engineering, there were 15,174 choices (23% increase).
With 15,061 students selecting it as one of their options, Civil Engineering emerged as the sixth most popular course, up 18.40 percent from 12,720 the year before.
Some of the emerging courses at IIT Bombay are Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science, Energy Engineering, and Environmental Science and Engineering. These three programs have grown by 23.53, 19.43, and 27.43 percent, respectively. More than 9700 students expressed interest in the field of instrumentation engineering this year.
The other developing non-engineering fields include chemistry, economics, and bachelor of science in mathematics. The candidate choice count climbed from 5331 in the previous year to 7090 in 2024, a rise of more than 32% in the field of economics. The number of choices for the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics program increased by 35% as well, rising from 5145 in 2023 to 6954 in 2024.
Top engineering college in India is Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B). In QS World University Rankings 2025, IIT Bombay is placed 118th, Best Global Universities is at 635, and the newest NIRF rankings place it third in the "Engineering" category.
