The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D) Department of Design today announced the launch of the "BTech in Design," a new four-year undergraduate program that will begin in the academic year 2025-2026. There are only 20 spots available for each batch of this four-year program.

JEE Advanced rankings will determine admission to IIT Delhi's BTech in Design department. Nonetheless, candidates must also pass the UCEED (Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design) aptitude test.

This degree integrates technology with design, bringing together the best of both fields. A unique blend of learning processes, including systematic discovery and comprehension as in engineering education and exploration of personal and creative leaps as in design education, is what the program aims to encourage, according to the official notification.

The program would also include courses, with around half of them coming from the design core discipline and the other half coming from other departments, centres, and schools (much like other BTech programmes). The curricula have been created with the intention of fostering student collaboration and the formation of relationships between the design department and other departments, centres, and educational institutions.

We anticipate that the students who get a BTech in Design from IIT Delhi will eventually occupy prominent roles in business, academia, government, consultancy, and entrepreneurship. The curriculum gives students adequate options and flexibility to pursue a variety of career routes, according to Professor Jyoti Kumar, Head of the Department of Design.

“As the proposed curriculum is geared to prepare students for leadership positions, it is broad-based and analogous to the existing programmes at IIT Delhi. The approach of the Institute would be to create new leaders in design who can see the big picture as generalists and have the ability to go into details as a design specialist does,” Prof. Kumar added.
